Competency based program that trains students to operate standard industrial machine and metal working tools in the industry. Students are introduced to setup, operation, and preventative maintenance on metal working machines (milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, etc.) They learn to use and understand measuring tools, gauges, instruments, blueprints, shop mathematics and all aspects of metal working including basic metallurgy, precision work and quality control. Also covered is set-up and programming for CNC machines, and how to utilize a CAD/CAM system such as MasterCAM. Included in tuition is an opportunity to earn a minimum of four National Institute of Metalworking Skills Certifications (NIMS) and a toolbox with entry level tools that will be yours upon completion. Students have the opportunity to earn their CDL at a significantly reduced cost! Click here for more details.

What are the Benefits?
Because the Precision Machine program prepares students for entry-level positions, students have the option to continue their education and/or begin work at an entry-level position in manufacturing. The following are just a few of the careers a precision machinist can succeed at:
- CNC programmer/operator
- General machinist
- Lay-out worker
- Grinding machine operator
- Lathe operator
- Milling machine operator
- Drilling machine operator
- Quality control inspector
What is Precision Machine Technology?
The Precision Machine course is designed to teach the student set-ups, operations, maintenance, and repair of industrial-type metalworking machinery. The Precision Machine program at the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center has a large variety of metalworking equipment, including lathes and milling machines, which allows each student to receive hands-on time at the machines. Course content includes:
- Program safety
- Bench work
- Drill press
- Inspection
- Blue print reading
- Precision measuring
- Lathe
- Precision grinding
- Saws
- Milling machine
- CAD/CAM
- CNC operation
Skills Needed:
Projects worked on in this program have to be measured sometimes within one-thousandths of an inch. That is about one third of the diameter of a human hair! Students need the proper skills to be a successful machinist. They are:
- Precise math and reading
- Excellent hand-eye coordination
- Attention to detail
- Patience
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to follow precise directions and work independently
- Mechanical inclination
- Ability to problem-solve
- Creativity and imagination
