The Carpentry and Building Construction Technology program prepares students for careers in residential and light commercial construction areas, apprenticeships or continuing education at a post-secondary school.Students are instructed in areas from tool use, with strong emphasis on safety, through every facet of exterior and interior construction.

Conditions:

Students considering a career in carpentry should possess good math skills, physical agility and coordination, a good sense of balance, and no fear of heights.

Community Involvement:

Habitat for Humanity funds projects and the students are learning the skills to construct entire houses, as well as gaining pride and satisfaction with their projects.

Career Information:

Upon completion of the two-year program, students are entry-level ready for the carpentry field, which at this time is experiencing an extreme shortage of skilled workers. Students are also able to pursue post-secondary education.

What are the Benefits?

Carpenters may advance to carpentry supervisor or general construction supervisor positions. Some carpenters become independent contractors. Other job opportunities beyond the Career Center are:

  • Drywall and Insulation Installer
  • Carpenter
  • Maintenance
  • Remodeler
  • Roofer

Skills Needed:

Like any other career, certain skills are needed to succeed in the

carpentry field.  Some of these skills are as follows:

  • Good math skills
  • Physical agility and coordination
  • A good sense of balance
  • No fear of heights
  • Teamwork and independent worker
  • Understanding of measurements
  • Communication skills
  • Ability to handle prolonged standing, climbing and bending
